Á¦¸ñ: Resolving tensions in students¡¯ willingness to interact

In this presentation, I describe a number of tensions which exist in the lives of language learners in the classroom. I present these tensions as a series of continua, and I relate all of them to various aspects of interacting with other learners and with the teacher. The tensions are selected based on my own experience as an English teacher, on research findings and on the principles of a range of established language teaching methods. In all of this, I take the learner¡¯s perspective on interaction in the classroom. In order to do so, I briefly introduce the concept of ¡®willingness to communicate¡¯ as a way of guiding teachers to discover, reflect on and plan classroom interaction. Finally, I suggest a narrative approach to resolving some of the tensions. In other words, telling stories in a variety of ways enables learners to engage communicatively with each other and with their teachers.
