Michael McCarthy:

Michael McCarthy is an internationally recognized authority on ESL/EFL and Applied Linguistics. He is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, where he is co-director of the ANCODE spoken English corpus project, sponsored by Cambridge University Press.

He has published professional books in the areas of discourse and vocabulary with Cambridge, Oxford, and Longman. For Cambridge, he is co-author of English Vocabulary in Use, Essential English Vocabulary in Use, and their American English adaptations (Basic Vocabulary in Use and Vocabulary in Use Upper Intermediate) and is author of professional titles including Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers, Spoken Language and Applied Linguistics and Issues in Applied Linguistics. Finally, he is also editor of the Cambridge Word Routes series.
Michael McCarthy is currently Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at Nottingham

This session investigates vocabulary ¡®chunks¡¯ (recurrent clusters of words) in everyday conversation, forcing us to rethink the distinction between lexis and grammar and reveal a lot about fluency and the socio-cultural nature of language use.
